Battlefield 3 – the death of COD?, 3 Nov 2011

This review is from: Battlefield 3 (Xbox 360) (Video Game)

To put things in perspective, I’ve owned all the Call of Duty and Battlefield games in the past, so I’m used to comparing the two. I’ve put hundreds of hours into COD games, it’s a simple, addictive, polished kill fest.
    Battlefield is a different beast.
Multiplayer is the arena where most players will spend most of their time, I haven’t actually touched the campaign yet. Here are the things which have been most noticeable for me.

Firstly, teamwork. You can try and play the game like COD but that won’t work. Constant streams of reward points flood in if you are doing your job right. Picture the scene; a fierce firefight for control of a flag – medics reviving downed players and laying down health packs, support gunners keeping enemy heads pinned down (the effect of a bullet narrowly missing your head is genuinely disorientating), engineers flaming rockets over your head into an tank, and snipers cracking shots into enemy melons from hundreds of metres away. The combined effect is immersive, loud and a bit scary. Just like war should be. (apart from the actual dying thing…)

Secondly, vehicles. These are genuine game-changers as opposed to pastimes. Just yesterday morning I faced the situation where my team were 2-1 down in terms of controlled flags of a map. So I jumped in a chopper with two other guys, cruised over to a contested flag and was having a dogfight with another helicopter as my teammates were parachuting out to secure the flag. No microphones involved, people just work together. And who doesn’t want to fly a fighter jet?

Finally, it’s not COD. Call of Duty have over the years produced some great games. However increasingly these games have only been great because a) you know exactly what you’re going to get and b) everyone else is getting it so you’re pretty much going to have to. By all accounts, Modern Warfare 3 is going to be a carbon copy of Modern Warfare 2, with new maps.

Try something different, I wont be buying COD!

    Battlefield 3. Satisfying., 1 Jan 2012

Battlefield 3. I like it, it has good moments, great moments, bad moments, and the “oh **** that was so awesome I wish there was a theater mode” moments.

Ok just a couple of negatives firstly. Well just one really: Playing with friends. Play on your own: fine. Start a squad: issues. Not all the time but there are some gremlins with getting friends in games with you. Especially if you have over 4 players, it just takes time and patience to get in the same game, or even to find one at times.

The online is very good. I love vehicles and the Conquest and Rush modes throw a large volume of them at you. All the vehicles from Bad Company 2 with the addition of jets. Jets which, when combined with good headphones and a large TV, make for some “THIS IS AWESOME” moments. With me that usually constitutes crashing into a forest at Mach 2. So the gameplay is good, defibrillators make a return as do all the expected weaponry.
Lock-on rocket launchers (Stinger, IGLA, Javelin) make for some varied gameplay as well as added bits and pieces for guns such as: bipods for steadied aiming, red laser sights and tactical lights (the latter two blind the enemy somewhat while aiming at their face).

Helicopter flying is definitely more complex, I often try the barrel roll maneuver seen in the recent A-Team film, which is usually followed by the fiery death of myself and anyone else aboard at the time. Jet flying isn’t too hard to get to grips with, though some players are so excellent at it that it can be hard to get any air-time without being shot down by an enemy jet. My friend has rolled a tank fully over and I have thrown a jeep off of a cliff… and landed. As you can see this game is so much fun; more so when played with friends. In fact it makes playing alone seem rubbish.

The Frostbite 2 Engine is good, the destruction of buildings is very good, but I wish you could knock more structures down, this was one of the main gameplay weaknesses for me. I want to be able to flatten things more, it makes for cinematic gaming.

But here’s the best thing online: no lag. I play on 360 so I can’t vouch for the other platforms, but I’ve had a total lag time of about 30 seconds in all of my games put together (21 hours game time).

Just a few more things that I like: jet sounds flying over head, lock-on missiles, going prone, huge maps (good for air-based play styles).

This is more than a shooter, that’s why I love it, if you want to play in a game that encourages team playing and allows you to still get loads of points without even firing a bullet then this is the game for you.

I know this review is very positive, but I don’t want to b itch about everything, it won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it’s worth a go. Definitely.

Oh yeah, I haven’t played much campaign mode or co-op, but they seem perfectly good, the story is perfectly good, but the online will have you keeping that multiplayer disc in for the majority of the time.
